What makes T.C. Boyle's story titled "Admiral" one of the best American short stories?

Ms. Heltner's Welcome to the Blog

This course will reintroduce you to various forms and genres of prose and poetry. I use the term reintroduce because you will be reading literature as a writer. Certainly, we will analyze text in order to understand the genres studied and the creative techniques applied, however, these works are not intended to intimidate you or serve as a template for your writing. Rather, they are there to be an inspiration, a model, and a resource for you as you discover your own, unique voice.

This class offers you the opportunity to determine who you are as a writer and what you want to accomplish in your writing. Throughout the semester, we will ask the questions: What role does writing play in my life? Why is creative writing important to me/to the world? How does my writing connect me to something larger than myself? What is good creative writing? We will constantly question, explore, and experiment through our writing.

My hope is that you will create work that makes you feel proud. I hope you will develop confidence as a writer, writing passionately and taking risks in your work. I look forward to working with you this semester!

This blog is designed as a space for you to continue the lively discussions we have in class. You will be able to post responses to specific tests, questions, and prompts. This will add an entirely new element to our class. More to come on blogging!
